What is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki is often translated as “universal life energy”—rei meaning something like “universal” or “spiritual,” and ki referring to “life energy.”
During a Reiki session, a practitioner typically places their hands lightly on or just above a person's body in a series of positions. The practitioner channels/directs energy to support the person's natural ability to relax and heal.
What happens during a Reiki session?
A typical session:
-
You remain fully clothed, usually lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably.
-
The practitioner moves their hands through a sequence of positions, either touching the body lightly or holding their hands slightly above it.
-
Sessions commonly last around 30–50 minutes.
-
People may experience warmth, tingling, heaviness, relaxation, or simply nothing particularly noticeable.
Importantly, Reiki does not involve massage,
manipulation, needles, or medication.
